So last Friday I posted about going to look at an MX83 Cressida and I was pretty Excited about it.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
However I didn’t even go look at it :(. The next morning the Dude Bro, wannabe drifter that owned the beautiful Cressi informed me that he had welded the differential... Dispite the CL ad stating that it was not welded. So this guy welded the diff on a car he was trying to sell... oh here’s the ad.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
After bottling up my rage(two hours later) I texted him back and told him I’d still be interested in the car, at 800 dollars less than the asking price of 3300 dollars(I had already told him the most I could pay was 3300, but would need to see the car to actually make an offer). Why 800 you ask?
I no longer trusted DriftBro, if he is dumb enough to weld a diff on an daily driven lux sedan, why would I believe he properly performed the manual swap.
The car had 218,000 miles on it and would be in need ot a new T-belt so theres $100 in parts and 3-4 hours of my time
I would need to replace the Diff now. I had already done my resreach and knew a proper LSD from a turbo Supra, and the needed conversion kit, would cost about 500 dollars, and take 6-8 hours total for a novice like myself.
I just did wan the car that bad any more (not really true, I’m still now on the hunt for a stock X chassis)
Also tonight My maybe going to look at an 88 MX73 which I like the looks of even MORE!
(I dont have any pics of it)

“dont bother me unless you have any money” is usually a sign the seller is an asshole to begin with. Ad now reflects the “recently welded diff” too, likely because he got caught out!

So, “Is the diff welded” now a common thing we must ask for any RWD car on CL?

He claimed there was some one else interested it would be great if that person either doesn’t exist, or also didn’t want a welded diff.

If I don’t buy anything in the next month I may call him up and see if he would meet my price, But it’s no like it’s the only Cressida in Wisconsin/Minnesota, and the MX83s seem to hold out well against rust. IDK about the MX73s tho.

no clue. 505’s equation - Japanese steel + any salt (or not even) = rusty cars!

haha I would leave it. If you are looking for a solid Cressida that is bone stock so you can have a good basis to start on, I can probably get you this for 2-2500 this summer when I track this lady down again...fuck the rice and you know this has been babied. Little old lady uses it to get to church and the grocery store

I drove half year with a ‘67 Opel Kadett wagon with a welded diff. I didn’t do it because I wanted to have rear axle without a differential but the diff broke. My friend did some weird burnout stunt and the spider gears lost plenty of teeth. 55 hp of pure Opel power was enough for the diff and I didn’t even see how awesome the burnout was...
We just welded the spider gear remains together and the car was running again. Very cheap fix but of course not totally legal. It was surprisingly good with the welded diff but eventually I replaced the welded diff with a working one.
So maybe the DriftBro broke his diff too.

I grew up with an 1985 MX73 in the same color. My father forced me to junk it for $300 in 2008.

I used the money to take my motorcycle classes so it wasn’t all bad. But yeah, it’s probably one of my saddest moments.
You can tell a Finn but you can't tell him much

The seals in the engine were going and in other places, Power steering was leaking, and minor rust. I wanted to make it a project car but at the time we were planning on moving and while the new place had a driveway and a garage, my parents thought it would be a waste of time and money for me to work on a project car when I’d be at school most of the year.
